General Information on Bearded Dragons.
  • The Pogona is a genus of reptiles containing eight lizard species often known by the common name bearded dragons.
  • The name "bearded dragon" refers to the underside of the lizard's throat, which can turn black and puff up due to many causes.
  • When threatened, bearded dragons puff up their bodies and beards to ward off predators and make their dull spikes seem dangerous.
  • Both sexes have a beard, but males display it more frequently, especially in courtship rituals. Females show their beards as a sign of aggression.
  • They are usually found in Australia and inhabitable environments such as deserts and shrublands.
  • They can be found on fallen/broken trees, rocky outcrops, and bushes when basking in the sun.
  • Adult bearded dragons are very territorial.
  • The bearded dragon comes in many different colors.
  • Eight species of bearded dragons are recognized today, all of which are called beardies by their caregivers.
  • Among the most popular pet reptiles, bearded dragons tend to be gentle, inquisitive, and active during the day.
How to Take Care of Bearded Dragons
  • Their diet includes plants, vegetables, and insects, such as beetles. Sometimes, they also eat small lizards or rodents.
  • They're now bred in the United States as pets and come in various colors not commonly found in the wild.
  • They need warm habitats because they are cold-blooded and need heat from external sources to raise their body temperature.
  • Due to changing seasons, some bearded dragons may go through brumation, a type of hibernation in which they stop eating and only drink water. That happens in the fall or winter.
